Selena Gomez Gets Emotional During 'Hand in Hand' Hurricane Benefit

Selena Gomez teared up while speaking about a family in Texas during the Hand in Hand telethon.

The 25-year-old actress and singer spoke out about the Saldivar family, who lost seven people while trying to escape Hurricane Harvey.

“August 27th, seven members of the Saldivar family try to escape the rising floodwaters. Their van is swept into the bayou. Only Sammy Saldivar manages to survive,” Selena explained.

She added, “I come from Grand Prairie, about 250 miles away from the Saldivar’s home. Their story affected all who heard it. And no matter who we are, the differences we have suddenly did not seem to matter. Since that day we have joined together — neighbor helping neighbor, without stopping to think about race, religion or anything else.”

Lupita Nyong’o snaps a selfie with fellow actors Daniel Craig and Julianne Moore while sitting in the phone bank at Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief on Tuesday (September 12) in New York City.

Sitting behind the trio were Savannah Guthrie and The Tonight Show‘s Questlove, who got in the selfie as well. “Call me!…or call Daniel Craig! 1-800-258-6000 #handinhand,” she captioned the pic below.

There were tons of stars at the event, including Uzo Aduba, Catherine Zeta Jones, Richard Gere, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Bruce Willis, Steve Buscemi, and Jason Alexander. Some talk show hosts who were there included Ryan Seacrest, Jimmy Fallon, Andy Cohen, and Michael Strahan.

Models Karlie Kloss, Lily Aldridge, Jourdan Dunn, and Karolina Kurkova took a break from fashion week to show their support at the event.

Beyonce Gives a Powerful Speech During 'Hand in Hand' Telethon (Video)

Beyonce was not present in the live studio for the Hand in Hand telethon, but she sent a taped video message in which she gave a powerful speech.

The 36-year-old entertainer, whose hometown of Houston was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey, gave a plea for viewers to donate to hurricane relief.

“During a time where it’s impossible to watch the news without seeing violence or racism in this country, just when you think it couldn’t possibly get worse, natural disasters take precious life, do massive damage and forever change lives, leaving behind contaminated water, flooded hospitals, schools and nursing homes,” Beyonce said in the message.

“Natural disasters don’t discriminate,” she added. “They don’t see if you’re an immigrant, black or white, Hispanic or Asian, Jewish or Muslim, wealthy or poor. It doesn’t matter if you’re from Third Ward or River Oaks, we’re all in this together. Seeing everyone of different racial, social and religious backgrounds put their own lives at risk to help each other survive, restored my faith in humanity.”

Leonardo DiCaprio & Jamie Foxx Join Forces for 'Hand in Hand' in NYC!

The guys worked together in the 2012 movie Django Unchained and now they’re working together to help raise funds for the people affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.
